Farm to School Connections: How can local and school district policies support Farm-to-School Work?

What would you like to see in a state-level Farm-to-School program?

The seventh, and final, in this year’s series of Farm-to-School Connections Team meetings focusing on Farm-to-School Partner Perspectives and Policy Developments.

This meeting is free and open to the public and no registration is required. For more info, go to: www.farmtoschoolwashington.org

Join us to talk about opportunities for parents and farm to school advocates to strategize on local and school district policies that impact Farm-to-School efforts in Washington State.

Last month we discussed the state-level policy Local Farms-Healthy Kids, and got started on some thoughts about what a state Farm-to-School Program might include.  We’ll continue that discussion this month and move into discussing creative ideas for what can happen at the local and school-district level.   This is a great time to talk about school gardens!

Key topics in the conversation will include:

  • What would you like to see in a state farm to school program?
  • How can school districts support farm-to-school policies, beyond the role of the school nutrition service directors?
  • How can city and county governments support efforts to get local food or gardens into schools?
  • Ideas for how parents can advocate for stronger farm-to-school policies.

WSU King County Extension organizes Farm-to-School Connections Team meetings to provide a forum for education and information-sharing among interested parties working to expand the use of locally grown food in schools and support education about food and farming.  The group’s mission is to improve health and enhance local agriculture by linking farms and schools.   We encourage anyone interested in farm-to-school issues to join us for meetings.  Children are welcome, and we will have some simple coloring and books to help keep them occupied!
