The future Orchard

the creation of an agricultural treasure

Wild fruit tree seedlings from the past become part of an orchard for the future. Amongst the trees and overgrown acreage at 21 Acres, a valuable agricultural treasure is being created. Organic farming practices will be demonstrated in the Orchard, with the use of  green fertilizers and natural pest management.  The upper canopy of fruit trees is complemented by an under-canopy of spring bulbs, spike roots, and insectaria plants as well as nitrogen and nutrient crops. Small livestock forage the orchard to manage insects and weeds and to provide manure (fertilizer) for the trees.

Goats, the Okanogan Oberhasli breed, currently graze the Orchard area. They are from Udderly Crazy Farm whose owners John Migleo and Carolyn Hooker have been raising goats for over 25 years. The Sammamish Valley 4-H under the leadership of David and Lila Chapman are helping oversee the animals.

21 Acres has partnered with the Seattle Tree Fruit Society, who is helping  determine which fruit trees throughout the Farm bear the best fruit. The area the goats are currently managing will be home to several new varieties of fruit trees. Planting should begin in fall, 2007.

The community will learn how to grow a variety of fruits that do well in this climate. Fruit trees, shrubs and vines will be grown using techniques suitable for hobby farmers or urban home owners. Volunteers helping develop and maintain the orchard can participate in the fruit harvest.
