Nature's Golden Spiral at 21 Acres

spiral garden plan and construction

True to Nature, this garden was constructed using the geometry of the golden spiral. From the spiraling bracts of a pine cone to the path a fly follows as it approaches an object, this geometry is found throughout Nature.

The stones that form the spiral retain the Sun's heat and warm the soil, providing optimal growing conditions for the vegetables growing in this garden.

The vegetables growing in this garden are all Heirloom varieties. An heirloom plant is an open-pollinated cultivar, commonly grown before the industrialization of agriculture. Heirloom vegetables are true to type and are an expression of the natural evolution of it's species. Typically, heirlooms have adapted over time to whatever climate and soil they have grown in. Thanks to their genetics, they are often resistant to pests, diseases, and extremes of weather.

Take off your shoes and experience the Foot Garden. The different materials used on this spiraling trail have been orchestrated to openly demonstrate the effects of reflexology. Reflexology is an ancient healing art based on the understanding that reflex points exist in the feet, hands & ears which correspond to all parts of the body. A recent study shows that walking on specifically placed uneven, natural stones stimulates acupressure points in the feet and can improve circulation, and reduce overall stress.

At the center of this garden, reaching to the sky is a bathouse. As part of our integrated (natural) pest management plan, the resident bats replace bug spray. They eat flying insects that could potentially devistate our crops. In addition to keeping the insects in check the bats provide an exceptional source of fertilizer commonly known as Bat Guano.
