Green Building
LEED Certification Green Building
We are facing major environmental and health issues in our North American cities. These concerns include urban heat island effect, the intensity of storms, microclimate around buildings, imperviousness of sites, poor air quality in increases in respiratory disease. Green towers, living walls, vegetated rooftops and ecological site developments are starting to address global impacts and community level issues as well as the personal health and comfort of building occupants.
Building on its successes, plans are underway to construct the 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living. The Center demonstrates innovative technologies such as a Living Roof along with photovoltaic solar panels, geothermal energy systems, and composting toilets, conserving energy usage and returning value to the earth. The buildings on the property will be used as an opportunity to educate the public about tools they can use in their own homes to make a positive difference in the environment.
The Center, housed in this state-of-the-art "green building" will be among the first in the nation to achieve "platinum" LEED certification for its boundary-shattering earth-friendly features and systems. The Center will be a highly visible example of people, land, agriculture and wildlife co-existing productively and harmoniously. The 21 Acres Center will also provide a year-round farmers market, an accessible system of interpretive trails, ongoing educational programs, and a beautiful venue for community gatherings and celebrations.
This vital infrastructure and education will help keep small farms in business!
